Permissions & Licensing

The ROM receives approximately 15 to 20 image requests per week. Most of these clients are from Canada, USA, UK, Europe and Japan and include other museums and art galleries, book and magazine publishers, as well as film and television production companies.

The most requested images include the ROM’s Acropolis model, and various paintings by Paul Kane such as Clal-lum Women Weaving Blanket and Spearing Salmon by Torchlight.

Recently, images from the ROM have been reproduced in publications such as the Emily Carr exhibition catalogue published by Douglas and McIntyre for the travelling exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada and the Vancouver Art Gallery, in the television program “The War That Made America” and in an exhibition titled “Voices of the River” at the French River Provincial Park, Ontario.

Reproduction of images and other media from the Museum’s collections is provided under a license agreement based on a client’s written request and ROM approval.

Images and other media such as film or video are available for personal and commercial use:

Personal Use:
Images can be used for private enjoyment or study only and cannot be reproduced, distributed or broadcast without further permission.

Commercial Use (including educational, academic and scholarly use):
Images can be used in a product produced by a commercial entity or by a non-profit entity for profit-making, commercial purposes or a product produced and distributed free of charge, at cost, or at a minimal charge generally by a non-profit organization.

Reproduction costs are based on production and use fees; all fees are for one-time, non-exclusive use, and may be renewed upon request. The ROM reserves the right to apply special fees for some non-commercial and/or commercial uses.
