Travelling Starlab

General Information

Discover the Wonders of the Universe in the Royal Ontario Museum's Travelling Starlab.

The Outreach Services Department proudly presents our new Travelling Starlab Program, an exciting way of teaching people about the universe, in a unique learning environment. This program is both inter-disciplinary and relevant to your curriculum.

About Starlab

What: Royal Ontario Museum's Travelling Starlab
Where: Bring the Starlab to your location; anywhere in Ontario.
Who: The Travelling Starlab programs are designed to accommodate schools, community groups, museums, libraries and parks (which have an indoor space).
How: Depending on the dome selected, between 25 to 50 participants crawl into the Starlab and sit around a central projector to experience the stars and constellations around them. A powerful fan inflates and circulates air throughout the dome to maintain a comfortable temperature.

Programs

Outreach Services' offers two Travelling Starlab programs, the Deluxe - Teacher Assisted Program and the Basic - Unassisted Program.

Deluxe - Teacher Assisted Program
Who: Have the ROM bring its expertise to you. The ROM will send an astronomy teacher with the Giant Starlab to your organization to explore the wonders of the night sky with up to 50 people per class.
What: Presentations compliment the astronomy topics in the Government of Ontario curriculum guidelines. Our community group topics, such as the Girl Guide or Scout lessons focus on their respective badge requirements.
Why: For 200 students, you can spend as little as $700 a day for a tailored program at your location, or you can spend approximately $2,200 (admission & transportation) on a visit to a planetarium, with a dictated program. Prices vary pending on location of venue, length and time of day of program.

Basic - Unassisted Program
Who: This program is ideal for museums, libraries, parks (which have an indoor space), community groups, as well as schools.
What: Teach your own astronomy programs in your community by borrowing the Standard Size Starlab (accommodates up to 25 people per class.) To help you get started, a ROM Starlab instructor will walk you through the components and the presenter's guide at your venue. The Presenter's Guide includes suggestions on how to teach the basics of the night sky and Greek and Roman mythology.
Why: The Basic - Unassisted Program is a fabulous way to raise your organization's profile and funds.
